Diving Deep for Conservation: My Upcoming Shark Tagging Adventure with Ilili Honduras
Jul 22, 2025 | By: Audrey Imfeld
Hey everyone, Audrey here! I'm incredibly passionate about the amazing marine life here in Roatan, especially our magnificent sharks. Just last week, I had an unforgettable shark dive as part of Shark Week here in Honduras with a truly inspiring organization: Ilili Honduras. The breathtaking shots you'll see illustrating this very article were taken during that incredible experience!
And speaking of unforgettable experiences, I'm beyond thrilled to announce that in just a few weeks, I'll be joining Ilili Honduras on an actual shark tagging expedition! Get ready for an inside look at the vital work being done to protect these incredible creatures.
Who is Ilili Honduras?
So, who exactly is Ilili Honduras? They are a dedicated non-profit organization based right here in Honduras, driven by a profound passion for the marine environment, with a specific and urgent focus on shark conservation. Their team is comprised of marine biologists, divers, and local advocates who are tirelessly working to understand, protect, and educate about the sharks that call our vibrant Caribbean waters home. They recognize that sharks are not just apex predators, but crucial indicators of ocean health, and their decline impacts the entire marine ecosystem.
What They Want to Accomplish: A Mission to Save Our Sharks
Ilili Honduras's mission is clear: to save sharks through scientific research, education, and community engagement. They strive to accomplish several key goals:
-
Research and Monitoring: They conduct vital studies to understand shark populations, their migratory patterns, breeding grounds, and overall health. This scientific data is crucial for informed conservation strategies.
-
Advocacy and Policy Change: Ilili actively works with local communities, fishing industries, and the Honduran government to promote sustainable practices and advocate for stronger protections for sharks, aiming to curb illegal fishing and finning.
-
Education and Awareness: A significant part of their effort is dedicated to changing public perception about sharks. They conduct outreach programs, workshops, and dives (like the one I joined for Shark Week!) to demystify sharks, highlight their ecological importance, and inspire a new generation of ocean stewards.
-
Community Empowerment: They work closely with local fishermen, helping them understand the long-term benefits of shark conservation and exploring alternative, sustainable livelihoods.
Ultimately, their overarching goal is to ensure a future where sharks thrive in Honduran waters, contributing to a balanced and healthy ocean for generations to come.
My Role: A Citizen Scientist on a Shark Tagging Expedition!
The upcoming shark tagging expedition is a perfect example of Ilili's hands-on approach to conservation, and I am incredibly excited to be a part of it as a citizen scientist. What does that mean? It means I'll be assisting the marine biologists with various tasks during the expedition, collecting valuable data that contributes directly to their research.
This isn't just about getting up close with sharks (though that's certainly a perk!). It's about participating in the scientific process: identifying individual sharks, potentially assisting with measuring, and observing their behavior as they are briefly and safely handled for tagging. Each tag provides essential data points on their movements and habits, helping Ilili and other researchers track and protect these magnificent creatures more effectively.
As a keen photographer, I'm also really hoping to get even more great shots of these sharks to contribute to Ilili's visual library for educational purposes. My recent Shark Week dive with Ilili, and the images from that experience you see here, have only fueled my anticipation for what's to come!
Stay tuned for updates from the expedition in a few weeks! I can't wait to share more about this incredible journey and the vital work of Ilili Honduras. Let's support those who are fighting to save our sharks!
